GitHub documents a maintained MCP server for connecting compatible clients to GitHub functionality. Individual tools retain their own access requirements.

Identity and scope

The provider, its official MCP server, a repository and a third-party package are separate identities. Availability of a server does not authorise repository changes.

Questions before integration

1. Decide whether the task is read-only or changes repository state.
2. Review repository scope and tool permissions before connecting.
3. Distinguish official server documentation from community implementations.
